The Global Talent visa is a UK immigration routes which we often advise on and recommend when it is applicable. It is a very useful UK immigration path to work and settle for those who are recognised as excelling in academia or research, arts and culture or digital technology. There are some similarities to the USA’s O-1 as well as EB1A routes for talent (though Global Talent does not cover sports or business figures as such who can use other immigration routes to come to the UK).

Who can apply for the UK’s Global Talent visa?

We advise many applicants on the UK’s Global Talent immigration route to settlement every year, along with their families. The Global Talent visa is open to individuals aged 18 and over who are leaders or potential leaders in the following fields:

  • academia or research
  • arts and culture
  • digital technology

The UK Government has said it will be opening the visa to designers too. Applicants must generally demonstrate that they are already leaders, or show ‘promise’ in becoming a leader in their field, either through an endorsement from a designated endorsing body or by winning a qualifying award.

How to apply for a Global Talent visa

The application process for a Global Talent visa typically involves two stages:

Endorsement Stage: applicants must first secure an endorsement from the relevant government-appointed endorsing body. If an applicant has won one of the honours on a small list of ‘prestigious prizes’ (such as an Academy Award for a leading role, or a Turing Award or Nobel prize in science), they can bypass the endorsement stage and go straight to the visa application.

Visa Application: once endorsed, applicants can proceed to apply online for the Global Talent visa.

There is no minimum salary requirement or English language test for this visa. Each body has their own endorsement criteria, however for the most part an applicant will either fall under the Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise criteria.

Exceptional Talent: the applicant has already made a significant contribution to their field evidencing their place as a leader amongst peers.

Exceptional Promise: the applicant is at an early stage of their career, but shows great potential in becoming a leader, and contributing their respective field.

How long does a Global Talent visa application take?

Wait times depend on many different factors during the application process. The entire process, from endorsement to visa approval, may take a few months as endorsing bodies may take up to eight weeks to process an application (though it’s often quicker – sometimes as little as two weeks). Time to prepare evidence for endorsement needs to be factored in. requires preparation. If you already have an eligible job, this can speed up endorsements, whereas if you have to get your role peer reviewed this will slow the process down.

The visa application stage can involve a wait of around three weeks for those outside of the UK and eight weeks for those in the UK, although it is possible to pay for fast track options for to speed up the visa decision. Visa applications can also be made for partners and children under the scheme at the same time. You can only apply no earlier than three months before you travel to the UK.

If you don’t need an endorsement, we have turned applications around in a matter of weeks.

What work can you do on a Global Talent visa?

The Global Talent visa offers numerous benefits. You can work in any job, apart from as a professional sportsperson (which has its own immigration route), be self-employed or start a business without needing sponsorship. You can change jobs without informing the Home Office.

How long does a Global Talent visa last?

A global Talent visa lasts up to three or five years. After this period, you can apply to renew your visa or for indefinite leave to remain (ILR), otherwise known as settlement or permanent residence (after five years for those showing exceptional promise, three for exceptional talent) and people can generally apply for citizenship a year after they gain indefinite leave to remain.

What family can you bring to the UK on a Global Talent visa?

Dependent family members are permitted to join you. Dependant partners and children are husband/wife, civil partner or unmarried partner or children under the age of 18. They will need five years’ residence in the UK to qualify for settlement.

How to apply to extend a Global Talent visa or to settle

The Global Talent route is a great way to earn continual residency for settlement, or to simply extend the visa. This is one reason that the visa is so highly sought after, and although there are some conditions around extensions and settlements the conditions are relatively lenient. There are few other requirements for extending Global Talent visas or settling. As with all settlement application you must meet the continuous residence requirements, which may be reduced to three years from five depending on which stream you entered on. You must demonstrate that you have had no recourse to public funds, and that you have earned an income from the field that you entered into.

It is possible to extend the Global Talent visa for up to five years at a time, as many times as you wish. If you wish to extend your visa, you will have to demonstrate that the eligible prize or endorsement that initially granted you the Global Talent visa has not subsequently been withdrawn.

If you wish to extend the visas of your partner and children they will need to separately apply to extend their visa, which could be at the same time as you or anytime before their current visa expires.

There are also many advantages to settling with a Global Talent visa. The UK Government is currently considering its response to a consultation on qualifying for “earned settlement.” This may mean more hurdles to settlement, and possibly in the future for citizenship – though this would require separate legislation. In the meantime, those on a Global Talent visa may qualify after five years qualifying residence in the UK. Though they can qualify in as little as three years if a Global Talent visa was obtained by means of showing an eligible prize or endorsement for  ‘Exceptional Talent’. After a year of continuous residence with indefinite leave to remain (settlement) eligible applicants can start the process of applying for British citizenship.

Do you need work in the UK for a Global Talent visa?

To get the Global Talent visa you do not need to already have a job offer or a sponsor lined up before you arrive in the UK.

With this visa you have flexibility to be an employee, a director or self-employed or study, but there is generally no access to public funds. However,  if you are thinking about extending the visa or applying for settlement you must earn some income in the field you initially entered in.

Do you need work in the UK to extend a Global Talent visa or settle?

For settlement or extension of a Global Talent Visa there is a requirement that you have earned an amount of money while you have been working in the UK. There is not a requirement for how much money you have to earn, but it must have been directly linked to the field you were accepted to work within.

How much does a Global Talent visa application cost?

Visa fees (correct as of August 2026) are £766 (£561 endorsement stage + £205 visa stage), with partners and children each paying the £766 visa fee too. Prize holders pay the full £766 in one go at the visa stage, since there’s no endorsement step. The UK has an Immigration Health Surcharge payable upfront for the full period of the visa of £1,035 per year per adult, £776 per year for children under 18. This entitles people to use the UK’s National Health Service.

How do other UK visas compare to the Global Talent visa?

The vast majority of UK work visas involve being sponsored as a Skilled Worker by an organisation that has a Skilled Worker sponsor licence. A Skilled Worker sponsor licence is a popular option for employers as it is a relatively straightforward way to source a range of highly skilled staff across different disciplines and their visa is contingent on working for the employer. Skilled workers can bring dependent family and settle after five years (though this is currently under review). There are no caps on numbers but there are skills and salary thresholds to obtain Skilled Worker visas and vacancies do have to be genuine, among other requirements. There are other sponsored options contingent on an employer with a sponsor licence, such as International Sportsperson, Scale-up and UK Expansion Worker, all with their own rigid rules and requirements too.

The UK’s new Innovator Founder visa has replaced the Innovator and Start Up visas, offering founders another route to come to the UK to start businesses. However they must have a business plan that is endorsed by one of the endorsing bodies, which they then need to meet targets on to renew their visa or settle.

Some nationalities can make use of the Youth Mobility Scheme, though this is limited to two or three years and does not lead to settlement. Nor do Student visas. Graduate visas offer a limited opportunity to live and work unsponsored in the UK and some people we advise may have graduated from one of the top global universities in the past five years that qualify them for a High Potential Individual visa, though time spent on this two or three year visa does not lead towards settlement.

There may be other options leading to settlement such as applications relying on a British or settled family member or possibly Commonwealth citizens with a grandparent born in the British Isles that qualifies them for the Ancestry route to settlement in the UK.

But usually if someone qualifies for a Global Talent visa, we would advise that it is a trouble-free, flexible way to live and work in the UK, or abroad, and to come and go whenever you want.
